St. Anthony Fire, which so’s
L'shingles can cause a painful rash, better known as a St. Anthony's fire'Antony. This herpes is caused by the varicella zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox.
Chickenpox virus
The chickenpox virus, which in childhood almost everyone has had, remains in an inactive form within clusters of nerve cells (nerve ganglia) from which nerves branch off and, even after many years, may reawaken in the form of shingles (although not necessarily).
At first, it may manifest as an inflammatory plaque covered with elongated vesicles affecting one side of the body (usually only one side of the chest or abdomen but any part of the body can be affected, even the face or eyes).
The blisters then turn yellowish in color, flatten out and dry out to become scabs, which once they peel off, can leave some small scars or loss of color on the skin.
Other symptoms related to shingles are:
- burning or stabbing pain
- fever
- itching
- headaches
- chills
- stomach ache
- exhaustion
Shingles and shingles cannot be prevented and indeed, once one has suffered from it, it can reappear even years later.
Certainly if you are aware of patients with this disease, you should avoid contact with them and their clothing.
It is possible to recover from shingles, in fact it spontaneously heals in a few weeks, or local treatments can be used to reduce symptoms such as antivirals, painkillers and anti-inflammatories.
However, it is always best to consult your doctor when you suspect you have shingles in order to start treatment immediately, especially in cases where.
